DEAD END by cultureplasticart DEAD END by cultureplasticart
This is a piece of sheet metal thats about 3ft by 4ft that i use to practice my stencils on before i take them out to the streets. Usually my stencils require some form of "tweeking" which isn't always obviously until you actually do the stencil. Those of you who practice stencil art know what i'm talking about. Alot of times adjustments have to be made to either make the stencil clearer by messing with the contrast between the two colors used or changing the stencil just to make it easier, quickier, and more efficient to use under potentially stressful situations. So this piece of metal has layers upon layers on it which have been built up over a long period of time of stencils which have no relationship with each other. This wasn't some carefully thought up composition.

With that being said I really didn't think much of this "piece". Until I showed it to my girlfriend and she absolutely loved it causing me to look at it in a totally different way. So i thought i would post it.

And yes, I'm hating on Obama, but more than just him. Rather what he represents which to me is the USA's government as a whole. Yes he is just a figure head so as being the figure head he represents the polices and laws that get carried out by both our government and the elites. So he is a perfect target. I know this point can be argued.

Obama doesn't seem to get enough hate. Its time to piss some people off. He is not the same president he campaigned to be.

'but more than just him. Rather what he represents which to me is the USA's government as a whole' This is your most important point, I think. It's not about Obama, nor was it about Bush before him. Thinking about these individuals is a distraction (though is case of Obama, it's more of a distraction for those on the Right, than for those supporter now disenchanted with his leadership). The problem is so deeply systemic that no individual could fix even if the individual with the will to do so could capture the office (he or she could not); government, as it currently functions, simply attracts the wrong kind of people. Hating Obama isa distraction; everything done is designed to keep us from looking elsewhere, and what is really happening.

There's a lot of bull crap talk right now about helping the Arab peoples 'realize their destiny', etc.; if we did the same thing, they'd gun us down in the streets.

You are right my friend. thank you for understanding. I'm just afraid that a lot of people are going to misinterpret the message when its up in the streets because i'm not going to have a paragraph disclaimer explaining the meaning behind it. but i guess you always run that risk when u post your work publicly don't you? At the very least it will cause people to question things which is really what this is all about.

We must always question authority. There are more of us than there are of them. Its a matter of waking people up which i hope this does on some level, for someone.

heres a good quote," Until the people rebel they will not become conscious and until they become conscious they will not rebel" -George Orwell

Thank you for your comment my friend

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I tend to freeze a bit whenever my in-box fills up.

I think that even with the explanation, people could/will misinterpret. That can't be controlled, as you noted. And I think, given the news of the past 2 weeks, more will see what you're trying to convey.

While I understand your point about questioning authority, and Orwell's quote, open rebellion seldom goes well. When it has worked, the reasons are rather nuanced, and when it doesn't (which is usually), well-meaning and/or innocent people get dead. As for waking people up, I'm with you, but then what? Open rebellion has a way of turning moderates into conservatives or worse. Now, I'm hardly suggesting we do nothing, but that is a discussion for another time. Right now I need to scamper off to work like a good slave.
